Urgent Percutaneous Tibial Nerve Stimulation

Percutaneous tibial nerve stimulation (PTNS) is a minimally invasive neuromodulation therapy used in the management of bladder and bowel dysfunction. In PTNS, a fine needle electrode is placed near the tibial nerve just above the ankle and connected to a low‑voltage stimulator. Mild electrical impulses travel along the nerve to the sacral nerve plexus, which influences bladder and pelvic floor activity. PTNS has been shown to improve symptoms of overactive bladder, including urinary urgency, frequency, and urge incontinence, and can also support the management of fecal incontinence.Treatment protocols typically involve a series of weekly sessions followed by maintenance therapy as needed, with good tolerability in selected patients.
